Surviving Winter Series

Winter historically has been a really challenging time of year for me.  I grew up in southwestern Ohio, about an hour north of Cincinnati.  We got a fair bit of snow, ice, and sometimes bitterly cold weather.  But the thing that was hardest for me during my time living there was just how damn gray everything was.  The pavement is a dusty gray from all the dried salt on the roads.  The cars all have a gray tinge to them because of the salt/snow/road dust dried on them.  The buildings are gray.  The sky is gray.  It all felt so devoid of life.  Of vibrancy.  Of vitality.

I think it’s part of the reason I was drawn to living further south all those years ago.  One of the first decisions I made when I graduated from graduate school was to move out of Ohio.  There was nothing tying me there anymore and I desperately wanted some nicer weather.

In this series of blog posts, we will explore some ways to break out of the winter “funk” some people find themselves in during this season and maybe even create some rituals and things to look forward to.  Feel free to comment, ask questions, and share some of your own favorite winter rituals that help you resist this important season a little less, and recharge your batteries a little more.

Happy Wintering!
